From Matthew 23:27
27Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchers, which outwardly appear beautiful, but inwardly are full of dead men’s bones, and of all uncleanness. 28Even so ye also outwardly appear righteous unto men, but inwardly ye are full of hypocrisy and iniquity.
Jesus was speaking to the nature of the existing order. Ridicule of authority is a valuable tool in the arsenal of common folks. It effective but seldom used. It is hard to lie into the face of ridicule.
